Crime and Safety
Graffiti
Local property owners fences have been vandalized with gang graffiti tags largely due to the Finch West LRT construction. We are working with the local city councillor, Metrolinx and the Toronto Police to see that the graffiti is removed.
Gun Violence
Local residents have expressed concerns about growing gun violence in the Jane-Finch community spilling over into our neighbourhood. Building on the insights of other local organizations, FKCA recommends a preventative approach to violence in the neighbourhood. Increases in policing, especially through programs like TAVIS, lead to excessive uses of force and heightened community tensions rather than addressing the root causes of violence.
When gun violence decreased due to community leadership and targeted investments in youth and family programs, funding for these initiatives was cut, yet hyper-policing strategies continued to receive support. (source)
Therefore we need to prioritize long-term investment in community commercial spaces that strengthen the local economy and create local jobs which has proved to foster safety.
